planting flowers in previously used dirt?

I had several pots of flowers for the summer on my deck. They were starting to die off and look shabby so I went out there today to pull them up and throw them away. The dirt in the pots is full of their roots. Question is, do I need to throw away all the dirt and start anew to put new flowers in? I bought some Mums for the fall and would like to put some in my pots. I didn’t know if it would really matter or not.

Thanks!

Hey Everyone!

I am moving to a new house in the next couple weeks and noticed that the previous tenants had a small flower bed in the front of the condo.

I have never planted my own garden before, only helped my mom. What is the best way to do it? Should I plants seeds or potted plants?

Also what are some suggestions for easy growing purple, pink, yellow & white flowers? can you grow gerber daisies?

Your help would be appreciated, I’m pretty clueless when it comes to this stuff!! Thanks!

Would it be lame to plant flowers this way?

My mom, sister, and I love to garden. And we’re planting a bunch of new flowers. I think it’d be cool to divide the flowers up by color. Have a patch of red, then orange, green, etc. I love the idea of a sharp contrast. They disagree. A nursery in our town does that and it looks really cool. What do you think?

I am planting a flower garden from seed in Yucca Valley CA, what flowers grow best in that desert area?

Mykiel O asked:

I am moving to Yucca Valley in Jan(from Ohio) and want to be prepared to plant the seeds in early spring. I want flowers that will grow in the natural desert soil without adding topsoil and ones that wont need much watering after they are established. I have a lot of area to work with so I want to do areas with wildflowers and also regular flowers. Ive been doing tons of searches but surprisingly enough cannot find any one book or source for desert flowers, so am trying to figure it out by searching :
arid soil, sandy soil, zone 9, full sun etc and then trying to pick out ones common to all the lists. Unfortunately, while I have found a lsome useful information about wild flowers, I’ve found very little on *regular* flowers.. So if anyone has experience with flower gardening in the Mojave/desert any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much . Mykiel

Morgenstern asked:

It is about 15 feet long and 5 feet deep. The soil is not the best but is decent. It doesn’t get the sun until about 11am then only until about 4 or 5pm.

What kind of flowers should I plant in here?? I bought some seeds for Dianthus, Monarda, and Oriental Poppies but would these all go together?? Any other suggestions?

Also, should I start the seeds inside or is it okay to plant them out there?

Thanks!
